Leading in Administration of the Library Media Program

The library media specialist is more than "keeper of the books." The library media specialist must be willing to step up and take a lead role in the school community. An obvious area for leadership is in the library. We should be willing to step up and take a leadership role in our program. We can address curriculum needs, teaching, learning, and technology through the library media center. If we don't accept responsibility for these areas, someone else will. We must view ourselves as leaders in and contributors to the greater school community. If we don't , we will never be taken seriously--never seen as more than "keeper of the books."

Leading in Curriculum & Instruction

One role of the library media specialist is to be a leader in the school curriculum. A good starting place for this would seem to be district curriculum committees.

Leading in Technology

Technology is just one area where school library media specialists must lead. I've just been reading about blogging, especially educational blogging. This is a completely new concept for me. However, as a former library media specialist, it would be my responsibility (although not my responsibility alone) to investigate this learning tool: how does it work--not technically-speaking, what do teachers/students know about blogs, what might its uses be as a learning tool and as an instructional tool, how could it be integrated into the classroom setting, does it have knowledge-building capabilities that fit into the curriculum? And on and on the questions could go.
